How to Make Your Keyboard Thocky: 7 Mods Ranked by Cost and Effort
Updated
To make a keyboard thockier, lower the pitch and remove the high-frequency ring: swap to thick PBT keycaps, fill the hollow space in the case with foam, tune the stabilizers, and lube or change the switches. Start with the cheap, reversible steps and record a short sample after each one so you can hear what actually helped.
Before you start: record a baseline
Prop your phone 20–30 cm from the keyboard in a quiet room and record 20 seconds of normal typing plus a few spacebar presses. Keep the phone in the same spot for every recording. Thock changes are often subtle, and it's much easier to hear them side by side than from memory.
Thock mods ranked by cost and effort
| Step | Cost | Effort | Effect on thock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desk mat | Low | None | Small |
| Tune stabilizers | Low | Moderate | Removes rattle that hides thock |
| Thick PBT keycaps | Medium | Easy | Large |
| Case foam | Low | Easy–moderate | Large on hollow boards |
| Tape mod | Very low | Easy | Deeper, poppier |
| Lube switches | Low | Slow | Medium |
| Swap switches | Medium | Easy on hot-swap | Medium |
| Softer plate or gasket mount | High | Involved | Medium–large |
1. Put a desk mat under it
A soft surface absorbs some of the vibration that would otherwise bounce off a hard desk. It's free if you already have one, and it's the easiest A/B test you'll do.
2. Tune the stabilizers
Rattle on the spacebar, Enter and Shift keys is high-pitched and very noticeable. Lubing the stabilizer wires and housings (and padding or clipping them where needed) often makes the whole board sound deeper because the loudest bad noise is gone. See keyboard stabilizers explained.
3. Swap to thicker keycaps
Thin keycaps vibrate more and ring higher. Thick PBT keycaps are the single most common change in thocky builds. Material, thickness and profile all play a part; see PBT vs ABS keycaps and do keycaps affect sound.
4. Add foam to the case
A hollow case works like a speaker cabinet and adds echo. Case foam under the PCB is the classic fix for a hollow, clacky board. See keyboard foam explained for the types and where each goes.
5. Try the tape mod
A few layers of painter's or masking tape on the back of the PCB is cheap, reversible, and widely reported to make a board deeper and poppier. Details in what is the tape mod.
6. Lube or swap the switches
Lubing removes scratch and spring ping, so the low end comes through more clearly. On a hot-swap keyboard you can also just swap to switches with a deeper sound; nylon housings are generally described as deeper than polycarbonate ones.
7. Go further: plate and mounting
Softer plates such as polycarbonate or POM, and flexible mounting styles like gasket mount, round off each bottom-out. These are bigger changes, often meaning a new plate or a new board. See plate materials.
What thocky builds have in common
Here's what builds that listeners actually called thocky have in common:
Can you make a clacky keyboard thocky?
Usually you can move it a long way. Most clacky budget boards are clacky because of thin keycaps and a hollow case, which are the two easiest things to fix. Clicky switches are the exception: the click is built into the switch, so you'll need to replace them to get a deep sound.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to make a keyboard thocky?
A desk mat, tuning the stabilizers and the tape mod all cost very little. If your board sounds hollow, case foam is the next cheapest step and often the most noticeable.
Do keycaps make a keyboard thocky?
They're one of the biggest factors. Thick keycaps, especially thick PBT, push the sound lower; thin keycaps ring higher and clackier.
Can you make a clicky keyboard thocky?
Not with the clicky switches still in it, since the click is built into the switch. Swap to linear or tactile switches, then work on keycaps and dampening.
Does lubing switches make them thocky?
Lubing removes scratch and spring ping, which lets the deeper part of the sound come through. It helps, but keycaps, case and dampening usually change the pitch more.
How do I know if the mods worked?
Record the same 20 seconds of typing from the same spot before and after each change. For an outside opinion, upload it and let listeners vote on how it sounds.
