What Is a Gasket Mount Keyboard? Is It Worth It?
Updated
A gasket mount keyboard holds the plate (or PCB) between strips of soft material, usually silicone or Poron foam, instead of screwing it to the case. Because the plate floats on those gaskets, typing feels cushioned and slightly flexible, and the sound is usually softer and more even across the board.
How gasket mount works
In a traditional tray or top mount, the plate is fixed at a few screw points. Every keystroke sends vibration straight into the case, and keys near a screw feel stiffer than keys between them.
In a gasket mount, tabs around the plate's edge sit between soft gaskets that are lightly squeezed by the top and bottom halves of the case. The plate never touches the case directly. That does two things:
- Feel: the whole plate can flex slightly, so bottoming out feels softer and every key feels about the same.
- Sound: less vibration reaches the case, which usually cuts ping and makes the sound deeper and more consistent.
Is gasket mount worth it?
If you like a softer, slightly bouncy typing feel, yes. Gasket mount has become the default on many enthusiast boards for that reason. If you prefer a firm, solid feel with no give, a top mount may suit you better.
It's also worth knowing that "gasket mount" covers a wide range. Some boards flex a lot, others barely at all. The plate material matters too: a polycarbonate or POM plate in a gasket mount is much softer than an aluminum one.
Does gasket mount sound better?
Here's how gasket builds compare with other mounting styles in community sound ratings:
Is gasket mount good for gaming?
Mounting style doesn't change input speed. Some competitive players prefer a firmer board for a consistent feel, but plenty game on gasket-mounted keyboards without issue.
Can you gasket mount any keyboard?
No. The case and plate have to be designed for it. On a tray-mount board you can get some of the same softening with foam, the tape mod or soft standoff mods, but it won't be a true gasket mount.
Frequently asked questions
Is gasket mount worth it?
If you like a softer, slightly flexible typing feel and a more even sound, yes. If you prefer a firm, solid feel, a top or tray mount may suit you better.
Is gasket mount good for gaming?
Mounting style doesn't affect input speed. Some players prefer a firmer board for consistency, but gasket mount works fine for gaming.
Does gasket mount affect sound?
Yes. Isolating the plate from the case reduces vibration passed into the case, which usually makes the sound softer, deeper and more consistent across the board.
Can you gasket mount any keyboard?
No. The case and plate have to be designed for it. Some tray-mount boards can be modded with foam or tape to soften them, but that isn't a true gasket mount.
